Embracing Change:Allowing Life to Unfold

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that life rarely sticks to the plan.

You can have your calendar organized, your goals mapped out, and a pretty good idea of what the next few months will look like. And then something changes. A plan falls through, an opportunity takes a different direction, or life throws you a curveball you definitely did not ask for.

Suddenly, you’re left trying to figure out what comes next.

I’ve always found it interesting how much comfort we find in routines and predictability. Knowing what to expect can make us feel secure, and having a plan gives us something to work toward. But what happens when things don’t go the way we imagined?

One of my favorite quotes about change comes from David Levithan’s The Lover’s Dictionary, where he describes change as “flux”:

Our moods change. Our lives change. Our feelings for each other change. Our bearings change. The song changes. The air changes. The temperature of the shower changes.

Accept this. We must accept this.

— David Levithan, The Lover’s Dictionary

There’s something so simple yet powerful about that reminder.

Change is happening all around us, all the time. Our circumstances shift, our priorities evolve, and sometimes even the things we thought we wanted begin to look different.

So why is it so difficult to accept that change is simply part of being human?

Why We Hold On to Control

I think part of it comes down to certainty.

When we feel in control, we know what to expect. Our routines feel familiar, our responsibilities seem manageable, and we can move through the day without constantly wondering what might go wrong.

But life doesn’t always work that way.

We can’t control every outcome, every person’s decisions, or every unexpected situation that comes our way. We can make thoughtful choices and prepare as best we can, but there will always be things that fall outside our control.

And honestly? That can be frustrating.

It’s especially difficult when a change affects something important to us—our relationships, our careers, our finances, or the future we’ve spent so much time imagining.

Sometimes, we become so focused on trying to get things back to the way they were that we forget to ask ourselves what we need now.

Learning to Let Go

Accepting change doesn’t mean you have to like it. You can be disappointed when something doesn’t work out. You can grieve the version of your life you thought you’d have. You can need time to adjust before you’re ready to move forward.

Acceptance simply means recognizing that something has changed and deciding how you want to respond.

Instead of spending all your energy fighting a situation you can’t alter, try shifting your attention toward the things you can influence.

Maybe that’s creating a new routine, asking for help, setting a boundary, or giving yourself permission to take a break. Maybe it’s acknowledging that you don’t have the answers yet—and that’s okay, too.

You don’t have to figure everything out in one sitting and sometimes, the next step is enough.

Look for the Good That Still Exists

One of the things I find most encouraging about difficult seasons is the way they can reveal unexpected moments of goodness.

People show up for one another. Someone offers a helping hand without being asked. Friends check in, strangers extend kindness, and small gestures become reminders that we’re not as alone as we might sometimes feel.

Those moments don’t erase the hard things, but they can help put them into perspective.

When life feels uncertain, it can be easy to focus exclusively on everything that’s going wrong. Making room for the good doesn’t mean ignoring reality or forcing yourself to be positive all the time. It simply means allowing both things to be true: life can be difficult, and there can still be beauty, connection, and hope within it.

Sometimes, the good is a major breakthrough. Other times, it’s a really good cup of coffee, a conversation with someone who gets you, or finally having a quiet moment to yourself.

I’ll take those little reminders wherever I can find them.

Focus on What You Can Control

When everything feels a little up in the air, it can help to bring your attention back to the things within your reach. Here are a few reminders worth keeping close:

  • Your response. You can’t always choose what happens, but you can work toward responding in a way that aligns with your values.
  • Your priorities. Give your time and energy to the things that matter most to you, rather than trying to do everything at once.
  • Your boundaries. It’s okay to step back from situations, conversations, or expectations that leave you feeling overwhelmed.
  • Your willingness to adapt. Changing direction doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Sometimes, it means you’ve learned something new.
  • The kindness you offer. Even when circumstances feel uncertain, you can still choose to treat others—and yourself—with compassion.

None of these things will make life perfectly predictable, that’s not the goal. The goal is to create a little more steadiness within yourself, even when the world around you feels like it’s shifting.

A Little Reminder

Life has its ups and downs, its highs and lows, its comings and goings. We don’t always get to choose the timing, and we certainly don’t get to control every twist and turn. But maybe there’s a little freedom in acknowledging that.

We can make plans without expecting everything to go perfectly. We can work toward the future while still appreciating where we are. And we can allow ourselves to change our minds, change our direction, and grow into people we haven’t even met yet.

You don’t need to have everything figured out to move forward. You just need to give yourself room to adapt.
