Decor on a Budget: Ways to Spring-ify Your Space
If spring is the season of fresh starts, consider this my official request to wake me up before you go-go, because I’m ready to say goodbye to winter and welcome a little sunshine into my space!
After months of heavier textures, cozy blankets, and darker colors, I’m craving lighter fabrics, fresh greenery, and rooms that feel a little brighter.
And if there’s one thing my countless hours of HGTV binge-watching and apartment-tour scrolling have taught me, it’s that refreshing your space doesn’t have to mean spending a small fortune.
Do I still occasionally dream of having a Joanna Gaines-level home makeover budget? Absolutely. But until that happens, I’m perfectly happy finding creative ways to make a space feel new without buying everything in sight.
Whether you’re decorating a dorm room, apartment, or your entire home, here are seven budget-friendly ways to bring a little spring into your space.
Rearrange Your Furniture
Before you buy a single thing, take a look at what you already have.
Spring cleaning is the perfect excuse to move furniture around, rethink the layout of a room, and see whether a few small changes could make your space feel completely different.
Could your reading chair work better near a window? Would moving your desk help you take advantage of natural light? Could you swap a side table from one room with one from another?
Sometimes, all a room needs is a fresh perspective.
Rearranging furniture can also help improve the flow of a space and make it feel more functional. And the best part? It costs absolutely nothing.
Pro tip: If you’re craving a new piece of furniture but your budget says otherwise, try secondhand shops, flea markets, online resale listings, or family hand-me-downs. You might find something with plenty of character for a fraction of the retail price.
Give Your Walls a Little Love
Walls can have a surprisingly big impact on how a room feels, but you don’t necessarily need a full renovation to refresh them.
If you’re able to paint, consider a lighter, warmer color or a subtle accent wall. If you’re renting or living in a dorm, removable wallpaper, temporary decals, and renter-friendly artwork can help you personalize your space without making permanent changes.
You can also rearrange the art you already own, create a small gallery wall, or frame prints you’ve downloaded or made yourself.
And don’t overlook the little things! Refreshing an old picture frame, painting a small table, or changing the artwork above your bed can make a room feel more intentional without requiring a major investment.
Before painting or applying anything to your walls, check your lease or any applicable restrictions so your spring refresh doesn’t turn into an unexpected repair bill.
Bring in Some Greenery
Nothing makes a room feel a little more alive quite like greenery. Plants can add color, texture, and a natural element to your space without requiring you to redecorate the entire room.
If you have a green thumb, consider adding a few small houseplants to a windowsill, bookshelf, or desk. Plants such as pothos and snake plants are popular options, although the best choice will depend on your lighting, watering habits, and pets.
Not confident in your plant-parent abilities? Start with one small plant and see how it goes.
You can also use faux greenery if you want the look without the upkeep. A few convincing stems in a simple vase can be just as effective for styling a shelf or coffee table.
Budget-friendly idea: Instead of buying new pots, look around your home for containers you can repurpose. Just make sure they’re suitable for the plant and its drainage needs.
Shop Your Own House
Before heading to the store, take a little tour of your home. You might be surprised by what you already own.
Maybe there’s a vase tucked away in a cabinet, a set of throw pillows you haven’t used in months, or a decorative tray hiding in a closet. Perhaps you have a stack of books that would look lovely styled on a coffee table.
Gather a few of these forgotten pieces and experiment with different arrangements.
Move accessories between rooms, restyle your shelves, switch out your bedding, or bring a favorite item out of storage.
You don’t need every room to look completely different. Sometimes, rotating a few accessories is enough to make your surroundings feel fresh again.
And if you’re anything like me, you might even rediscover something you forgot you owned. It’s basically shopping without the checkout line.
Get Creative With DIY Projects
If Pinterest has taught me anything, it’s that there’s seemingly no end to the number of things you can make yourself.
From simple artwork and decorative vases to customized picture frames and seasonal wreaths, DIY projects can be a fun way to personalize your space without paying designer prices.
The trick is to choose projects that make sense for your budget and skill level.
You could:
- Create your own artwork using colors that complement your space.
- Refresh an old picture frame with a little paint.
- Arrange inexpensive flowers in a vase you already own.
- Make a simple wreath using seasonal greenery.
- Give a tired-looking accessory a new look with a little creativity.
And if crafting doesn’t exactly make your heart sing, that’s okay! You don’t have to become a DIY enthusiast to decorate on a budget. Enlist a crafty friend, try a simple beginner project, or skip the DIY altogether and focus on other ways to refresh your home.
The goal is to enjoy the process—not accidentally turn a five-dollar project into a fifty-dollar one.
Bring a Little Spring Indoors
One of my favorite ways to make a space feel seasonal is to incorporate natural elements. Fresh flowers, leafy branches, and simple arrangements can add a touch of color and make a room feel brighter without requiring a whole new collection of decor.
You don’t need an elaborate bouquet, either. A few inexpensive stems in a glass vase can look lovely on a bedside table, kitchen counter, or dining table.
You can also use natural textures such as woven baskets, wooden accents, and linen fabrics to create a lighter, more relaxed feel.
If you enjoy collecting natural materials for crafts, be mindful of local rules and the environment. Choose fallen branches or other materials you’re permitted to collect, and avoid bringing home anything that could introduce pests.
And if fresh flowers aren’t in your budget this week? A branch clipping from your own garden, a bowl of seasonal fruit, or a simple arrangement of greenery can still make a lovely difference.
Refresh Your Space With Scent
Decorating isn’t just about what you see, it’s also about how your home feels when you walk through the door, and scent can be a lovely way to mark the transition from one season to another.
During winter, you might gravitate toward warm vanilla, cinnamon, or woodsy fragrances. For spring, you could experiment with lighter floral notes, fresh linen-inspired scents, or citrus.
Try a candle, reed diffuser, or room spray in a fragrance you genuinely enjoy. You can also open the windows when the weather allows, wash your bedding, and let a little fresh air circulate through your space.
You don’t need to buy a new collection of seasonal fragrances, either. Using up a scent you already own before trying something new is a budget-friendly way to switch things up.
Pro tip: Don’t forget your linens and closets. Freshly washed sheets, clean towels, and an organized wardrobe can make your home feel refreshed without adding another item to your shopping cart.
Always follow product safety instructions, especially with candles and fragrance products, and keep them away from pets and anything flammable.
A Fresh Space Doesn’t Have to Cost a Fortune
Refreshing your home for spring doesn’t mean buying an entirely new collection of decor or following every trend you see online.
Sometimes, the most effective changes are the simplest ones: rearranging your furniture, bringing in a little greenery, restyling a shelf, or finally putting those forgotten accessories to use.
Start with what you already have, decide where a small change would make the biggest difference, and add new pieces only when they genuinely serve your space and your budget.
After all, creating a home you love isn’t about how much money you spend. It’s about making your surroundings feel comfortable, personal, and reflective of you.
And if you manage to get that fresh spring look without blowing your budget? Well, I think Joanna Gaines would understand.
How do you decorate on a budget? What spring item are you adding to your space?

So excited to revamp the spaces in my home, especially after this dreary weather! Loving the simple ideas!
I’m excited for you, lol! Yes, the winter slump is definitely starting to hit so I’m looking forward to changing it up too!
I currently have two plants in my living room. Adding more greenery to my home is an excellent idea. I will get a plant for other areas including my bathroom, which has a large window that the sun loves.
High-five for plant life! My living room is full of plants, lol! I recently added some to my bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen — and it makes the spaces feel more lively!
Love these ideas. We just put up some wallpaper in the entry and it complete transformed and brightened up the space!
*Happy dance* wallpaper is one of my favorites decor go-to’s!
I LOVE this post! It’s inspired me to get going on my purging that I’ve put off for months. Your space and colors in these photos are gorgeous. I love how flexible you are too about your suggestions and that we can just look at this as a season shift and to just embrace a little change and not be stuck on the details.
Ugh! So glad you loved this! I LOVE your comment ?!
Spring always puts me in the mood for cleaning and purging (cause boy do I have a lot of stuff!). It’s so cool to switch up decor with non-committal ways (i.e, wallpaper & re-arranging furniture) so you can always switch it back if you’re not too happy with the results!
