3 Ways to Add More Self-Love to Your Routine
Self-love gets talked about a lot, but I think it can sometimes sound a little more complicated than it actually is. You don’t need a perfect morning routine, a weekly spa day, or an entire day dedicated to “self-care” to take better care of yourself.
Sometimes self-love looks much simpler.
It’s giving yourself a little more grace. It’s spending time alone without feeling like you need to fill every quiet moment. It’s noticing the good things in your life instead of rushing past them. And while those things might sound small, they can change the way you move through your everyday life.
Here are three simple ways to make a little more room for self-love in your routine.
1. Be Your Own Biggest Supporter
How often do you catch yourself replaying something you said, obsessing over something you could have done differently, or focusing on everything you haven’t accomplished yet? We can be incredibly hard on ourselves. It’s easy to get caught in an endless loop of I should have done this, I could have done that, and Why am I not further along?
But imagine talking to a friend the way you sometimes talk to yourself.
You probably wouldn’t remind them of every mistake they’ve ever made. You wouldn’t tell them they’re behind. You wouldn’t expect them to have everything figured out. So try offering yourself that same kindness.
A few ways to practice:
- Give yourself credit for showing up. Even on the days when you don’t feel particularly productive.
- Notice what you’re doing well. We tend to remember our mistakes much more easily than our accomplishments.
- Speak to yourself with more compassion. When you catch yourself being overly critical, ask yourself whether you’d say the same thing to someone you love.
- Celebrate small wins. Finishing something you’ve been putting off counts. Getting through a difficult day counts. Resting when you need to counts, too.
And if you want to try something simple, start your morning by naming one thing you appreciate about yourself. It might feel awkward at first, but that’s okay. We’re not exactly taught to compliment ourselves.
2. Get Comfortable Being Alone
There’s a big difference between being alone and being lonely. Learning that distinction was a game-changer for me.
For a long time, I thought being alone automatically meant something was wrong. I felt like I always needed plans, company, or something happening around me. Eventually, I started realizing that having time to myself wasn’t something I needed to avoid; it was something I needed.
Being alone gave me room to slow down and actually hear my own thoughts. I could reflect on my day, think about what I wanted, figure out what was bothering me, or simply sit in a quiet room without feeling like I needed to fill the silence. And the more comfortable I became with my own company, the more comfortable I became with myself.
You don’t have to spend an entire weekend alone to practice this, though. You can start small.
Take yourself out for coffee. Go for a walk without constantly reaching for your phone. Read somewhere peaceful. Have dinner by yourself. Spend an evening doing absolutely nothing.
Being alone doesn’t have to mean being disconnected, sometimes it’s simply giving yourself enough quiet to check in.
3. Practice Gratitude—Even for the Little Things
I know.
You’ve heard “practice gratitude” approximately a million times, but there’s a reason the advice keeps coming back.
When life feels overwhelming, it’s incredibly easy to focus on everything that’s going wrong. Gratitude doesn’t magically make those things disappear, but it can help you notice that they aren’t the only things happening.
And gratitude doesn’t have to be dramatic. You can be grateful for the big things, of course, but you can also be grateful for the tiny, wonderfully ordinary things.
A really good cup of coffee.
A song you haven’t heard in years.
Fresh sheets.
A text from someone you love.
A beautiful sunset.
Getting into bed after a long day.
Being able to breathe through your nose on allergy season’s best day.
Yes, I’m serious. The little things count.

Great tips Anna!
Being kind to ourselves is so important. We have to love and invest in ourselves if we want to be healthy and be able to give to others.
I started doing daily gratitude a couple of years ago. Every day I took a minute to really evaluate the day and find SOMETHING to be grateful about. I had some rules for myself, like it had to be relevant to that day, because I knew for the season I was in I needed something concrete. It was so vital in helping my mental health in that time! I’ve admittedly fallen out of that routine (and many others with this new season) but I should definitely get back on that!
Definitely pinning this to my self-care board!
Glad you found this helpful!
I remember a quote I read somewhere where someone in a relationship said “I wish you loved yourself the way you love me” and that hit hard! We’re so quick to give love to others that we sometimes forget to send that back our way.
I have to get back on the gratitude train as well! I really like the idea of setting rules and will definitely try that.
