Spring Break Without Breaking the Bank

March 11, 2020 3 min read 14 Comments

Ahh! The birds are chirping, warmth is in the air,  buds are bursting – that could only mean one thing… Spring is near! And, nothing screams spring like SPRING BREAK.

While traveling and spring break seem to go hand-in-hand, the reality isn’t always all that the movies portray it. Not everyone will be able to pack a bag and get out of dodge.  If this is you, take a deep breath from the terrible case of FOMO you might experience (Fear Of Missing Out) and look on the bright side!

Whether you’re a college student who’s staying on campus, heading home, or traveling, you’re bound to have a great time regardless of your location! Here’s how to cultivate a life of wanderlust and adventure, without breaking the bank.

PLAN AND BUDGET

It’s a cliche but it’s true. Dreams don’t work unless you do.

Have a dream destination in mind? Start looking at the details of how you can make that dream a reality.  Do some research on the total cost, not just advertised ones. Some people forget to factor in basics like local travel & excursions, souvenirs, meals, entertainment, etc.

Try looking into package deals and discounts offered with some credit cards or associations you may be a member of. Once you know how much you can expect to spend, you can start planning exactly how much money you need to put aside.

Need a side hustle to offset your trip?  Look no further than your own talents. Like to bake, make interesting crafts, art pieces or even dabble in calligraphy? Selling your goods or service at a local community event or flea market could be just the ticket. Oh, and students don’t throw away all those meticulous notes just yet.  Did you know you can actually get paid for all that Type A note-taking you did? Yep, just google a reputable service and start counting your extra ka-ching. Talk about a perfect way to add to your travel fund.

RESEARCH YOUR TOWN

Every place in America has hidden gems and fun things to do, so you don’t always have to travel far far away to find excitement. Nor should you overlook some smaller jolts.  Ask around!

If you’re staying local, maybe your town has a restaurant or coffee shop that takes special orders.  Think a Parisian-themed croissant or an Italian-flavored bagel. Or, perhaps there’s a really unique museum, factory tour,  or working farm nearby.

Whatever it is, hop online and search things to do not only in your immediate area but maybe a township or county over. You never know what you could be missing!

STAY POSITIVE

If you defeat yourself with a negative attitude, your dreams of travel will be dashed before they’ve begun; even if it’s local.

Keep a Pinterest board, write out a travel bucket list, and watch videos pertaining to your destination. If you keep your eyes on the prize it will happen in no time!

Another idea? Why not write a gratitude list of places you HAVE already visited? This will remind and inspire you to keep that wanderlust going!

KEEP OPEN-MINDED

You never know when an opportunity will find you! Maybe your church is offering a mission trip, or your job needs a representative in another city.

Spread the word that you want to travel as much as possible and consider literally any opportunity that comes your way. Sometimes the best memories come from the most unexpected place

One of my cousins loves volunteering at her companies’ charitable events, which are out of town most of the time. Tagging along is not only a great way to support her efforts, but I also get the chance to see new places while also having a budget-friendly “getaway”.

What’s your dream Spring Break destination?

I love your ideas on staying local! 🙂 Especially with corona virus, these can be extremely useful now. I always enjoy staying at home and visiting hidden gems nearby.

So true! Staying local is definitely a must now! Funny enough, I wrote this post like 1 month ago before all of the social-distancing stuff happened!

Thanks for the tips! We are just staying at home at this time due to the recent corona virus outbreak.

    • annaelleliz March 13, 2020 at 1:33 pm

Yes, totally understand! I’d stay at home or more local too!

These are great suggestions for saving money during spring break. We like to keep it super simple, we’ll probably just head out for some hiking and tennis.

So glad you liked them! I like keeping the breaks simple too! Those sound like such fun (and budget-friendly activity)

We are just staying at home, thank goodness! We plan on doing some local things, but they’re all cheap, so I’m happy.

    • annaelleliz March 12, 2020 at 1:38 am

Local and affordable are the way to go! There’s so many hidden gems begging to be found!

  • TheSuperMomLife March 11, 2020 at 5:33 pm

We were planning on going on a little vacation but because of the craziness with the coronavirus, we decided to stay home. I’m going to try to find something locally to do.

    • annaelleliz March 12, 2020 at 1:36 am

It’s definitely risky to travel abroad now! Locally seems like a good choice!
