The Roommate Series

August 18, 2021

When I say I’ve been planning this post ever since I started blogging, I’ve been planning this post ever since I started!

Now you might be thinking…not another blog post about college and roommates, but I promise you this one is gonna be, how should I say it without giving away too much… a tad different. Wanna know why? For starters, I collectively had a total of 27 suitemates. 2 colleges, and 5 rooms later…TWENTY-SEVEN!  I kid you not.

I mean I knew it was up there but when I didn’t have any more fingers and toes to count, I knew the number was legit high.

And with 27 suitemates/roommates, that means a ton of stories that have just got to be shared; not just for remembrance later down the line when I miss my good ol’ college days, but because these stories are entertaining AF (as I’ve been told by my friends ?)

So without further ado, sit back, relax, grab some popcorn (or, don’t…you’ll find out about that soon enough), and enjoy the stroll down memory lane.

SNEAK PREVIEW

The Roommates Series, Part 1. Fall Semester: You Mean I Have to Sleep There?!

I’m 18 and it’s 2 years post-high school since I took a gap year before embarking on my college journey.

I’m doe-eyed, excited, but super nervous as the longest time I spent away from home was a school day. Nonetheless, I was packed up and ready for my first collegiate year.

I chose a small school in upstate New York nestled in the mountains—quite literally—it was actually a couple of minutes away from the infamous town of Sleepy Hollow. And yes, boys and girls, the drive up was just as spooky as the stories neatly nestled within town. I’m talking, disappearing cars, ominous state troopers, and of course, pure bone-chilling fear…

Now I might have conveniently forgotten what the heck happened between that moment and actually arriving at school but the point is we side-roaded it—fog and all-cause I wasn’t missing move-in day!

Getting my room assignment, I’m met with the 6 girls who, unbeknownst to them, would be the start of the roommate brigade.

So here we have it! The start of The Roommate Series, I hope y’all stick along as we relive a big part of my college journey.

What were some of your favorite college or school memories?

HAHA, it’s only been 2 years since I graduated and it feels like forever ago! You gotta love the sweet back-to-school nostalgia though. This is definitely going to be an ongoing series so more adventures to come.

That is a lot of roomates! I was definitely over roomates by the time I moved in with my fiance. It’s usually a lot of craziness. Made some great friends, but I also like my own space 🙂

Best way to describe it! I loved having my roommates and all the cool adventures we had together (you’ll find out more about them soon) but I like my quiet time and space!

Unique is the best way to put it. It’s such an odd experience when you think about it; just getting put in a room with strangers for a year!

I commuted to college since I lived so close, so I never experienced this either. But, I can’t wait to read more.

Aww thank you! I’ll let you experience it vicariously through me all the roommates I’ve had ?! Did you ever want to dorm or did you prefer commuting after a while?

I didn’t get to experience a roommate since my school is just two streets away. But that’s a great experience though.

I didn’t have roommates in college because I preferred not to have them. So, I rented a room on my own.

Oh wow! Were you able to do it for the full 4 years? I know some colleges won’t let freshmen not be on campus, so kind of cool if you got that setup!

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t keen on a roommate in college. I preferred to be alone but couldn’t afford a single dorm so I had to deal with the noisiness.

LOLing at the noisiness! Personal space is kind of void with a roomate. I did evetually get a single dorm but still had a rotating number of suitemates.

I’m not a fan of creepy roads either. Roommates definitely can be a hit or a miss. Being able to pick your roommates or just having cool roommates in general definitely helps the college experience.

Those roads still haunt me ?. I mean that fog was movie set real! For sure with the hit or miss too! I definitely think picking your roommates eliminates some of those hits!

What a great series idea, I am HERE FOR IT!! And also, 27 suite mates!? that’s insane!! I was in a suite situation my sophomore year (in Germany) and senior year (I was the RA) and I much preferred it to the regular dorm situation. Quick way to make new friends!

Oh RA life always seemed interesting but being in charge or the go-to for whole hall would be too much pressure for me!

Wow...It's been a while hasn't it? Let's see, where to begin?
•
Well, this time last year, something felt really at odds with my spirit. I realized I needed a break from  social media— more so a break from Anna Elle Liz.
•
Believe it or not, I don’t particularly like spending a heckuva lot of  time on social media. For me, I've found that I’m more drained rather than replenished my when get my scroll on (hmmmp…  maybe someday I'll write  a blog post on that — Navigating Social Media When You Don't Really Like Social Media).Throw in all the viewing, reading, watching & clicking  - and a recipe for a major timeout was brewing.

Nuturing my personal and creative life, my growth made it clear that meeting the demands of Anna Elle Liz was something I could no longer do with the same excitement and vigor I once did.
 •
So, all this to say that Anna Elle Liz will be back (you know I can't miss out on Fall content) but at a slower and less scheduled pace.

We all know about the stars of Thanksgiving…the main characters, turkey and ham. But what about the supporting cast, the secondary stars of the show; the side dishes. I mean without the sides, can the main dishes even shine?
·
The stuffing, the creamy mashed potatoes, the corn on the cob, the green bean casserole, the mac ’n’ cheese, … yep, I can take this train to foreverville. For now, I present you with a definitive and completely non-subjective ranking of some of my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes!

If you could only eat one dish for Thanksgiving, what would it be?

I love me some pumpkin, but apples are another great fall staple. And there's something about going apple picking with a basket and plaid scarf that feels like I'm fresh out of a New England town.

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to Thanksgiving and the day that is set aside to feel thankful for what we have.
·
But how can we turn gratitude into a daily habit instead of a once-a-year holiday obligation?
·
By recognizing the abundance we already have…our family, our relationships, our material things that bring us comfort and our memories, dreams, and hopes.
·
Our lives can be enriched so much if we take the time to be thankful and see the good in all that we have.
