Dear Graduates: An Open Letter to the Class of 2020

May 6, 2020 2 min read 20 Comments

Dear Class of 2020,

You did it! Congratulations!

You survived the endless group projects. You worked hard at times, slacked off at others (hey, everybody needs a mental break). You walked the hallways of your school’s campus, for years, memorizing every turn and shortcut to get to class on time.

And now you’re about to embark on a new journey. But, this isn’t just any journey. Yours is one no one has traveled before. You’re pioneering a way for us all.  You’re not only experiencing history, you’re a part of it.

Because of the viral pandemic gripping the entire world, we’re all living a new norm. Shutdowns are not only sadly touching countless lives, but also many ways of life.  Proms, graduations, everything that is the norm for students, are either postponed or cancelled.

All the upheaval has created a bunch of emotions; needless to say, you have the right to them all! The uncertainty, the fearfulness, the anxiousness, and everything in between! Most importantly, you’re so allowed to feel like this just isn’t fair!

Though it may seem hard, please try not don’t dwell too much on the disappointment or fear that you might not get to walk across that stage at the end of the year. Be proud of your accomplishments! Just because we can’t celebrate in the traditional way doesn’t make you any less of a student or graduate. It doesn’t mean you didn’t work incredibly hard, and it doesn’t take away those endless nights of studying or editing papers.

Needless to say, while it would be nice to have a traditional celebration of your achievements, both academic and personal, you yourself are what you should celebrate. Celebrate all you’ve done, all you’ve experienced, and who you are about to become.

So stay positive, stay safe, stay sane, and most importantly, stay home. I’m rooting for all of you. This too shall pass and the promise of tomorrow is brighter than a moment.

Sincerely,

A Recent College Grad, Class of 2019

Thank you for these wonderful words of encouragement. I think we all can relate to this in many ways — more so the amount of emotions we’ve been dealing with.

You’re so welcome! I super glad you were able to relate to this! It’s been a roller coaster of emotions that’s sometimes hard to explain so I feel ya there!

  • rachel May 7, 2020 at 10:31 pm

    This is so beautifully written.

  • angela@marathonsandmotivation.com May 7, 2020 at 2:41 pm

This is such a thoughtful letter. There have been so many disappointments for people in the past few months…it has been especially rough for graduates….

    • annaelleliz May 8, 2020 at 4:32 pm

I completely agree! And with May typically being graduation month, it’s probably especially rough and bittersweet!

  • Perfectly said. I’ve just shared it with my daughter who sadly can’t sit her exams this month due to everything that’s going on at the moment.

That is the sweetest! It’s such a hard time for everyone and I totally get how graduates would feel like this is just unfair and disappointing. Rooting for you and your daughter!

  • Jolene May 6, 2020 at 10:49 pm

This is really sweet! I feel really bad for the seniors and their parents!

    • annaelleliz May 8, 2020 at 4:24 pm

We for sure have to show them some love 💕!

    Class of 2020 stay strong!!!!

    • annaelleliz May 8, 2020 at 4:18 pm

      Wishing them all the best!

  • Divine May 6, 2020 at 4:11 pm

As a recent graduate class of 2020 I really relate to this letter and thank you for writing this. It really felt unfair not to have a traditional graduation ceremony but I have gotten over it and I am still super proud to have made it true and this was one of my greatest achievements this year. Thanks for sharing it?

    • annaelleliz May 8, 2020 at 4:09 pm

Congrats to you! Much love and support from the class of 2019 over here! I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to adjust to not having the traditional ceremony, but big woot for all you’ve achieved and are going to achieve!

  • robynsnest1970 May 6, 2020 at 3:20 pm

Beautifully said. God bless the class of 2020. ?

    • annaelleliz May 6, 2020 at 3:25 pm

Thank you! I feel so much for them, too!

  • Sana May 6, 2020 at 3:15 pm

I miss my college so much!

    • annaelleliz May 6, 2020 at 3:24 pm

Me too! It’s only been a year but I remember all those awesome memories from then! Where did you go? I went to UNC-Chapel Hill!

Wow...It's been a while hasn't it? Let's see, where to begin?
•
Well, this time last year, something felt really at odds with my spirit. I realized I needed a break from  social media— more so a break from Anna Elle Liz.
•
Believe it or not, I don’t particularly like spending a heckuva lot of  time on social media. For me, I've found that I’m more drained rather than replenished my when get my scroll on (hmmmp…  maybe someday I'll write  a blog post on that — Navigating Social Media When You Don't Really Like Social Media).Throw in all the viewing, reading, watching & clicking  - and a recipe for a major timeout was brewing.
•
Nuturing my personal and creative life, my growth made it clear that meeting the demands of Anna Elle Liz was something I could no longer do with the same excitement and vigor I once did.
 •
So, all this to say that Anna Elle Liz will be back (you know I can't miss out on Fall content) but at a slower and less scheduled pace.
•
You must also know that I can't even think about a return without extending a super big thank you to all of the kind followers/supporters who've patiently waited with me,  during my hiatus.
•
Cheers to you! Cheers to re-starting content again! And, cheer to reaching 3-years of Anna Elle Liz with y.o.u.

We all know about the stars of Thanksgiving…the main characters, turkey and ham. But what about the supporting cast, the secondary stars of the show; the side dishes. I mean without the sides, can the main dishes even shine?
·
The stuffing, the creamy mashed potatoes, the corn on the cob, the green bean casserole, the mac ’n’ cheese, … yep, I can take this train to foreverville. For now, I present you with a definitive and completely non-subjective ranking of some of my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes!
·
If you could only eat one dish for Thanksgiving, what would it be?

Name a more perfect fall photo 🍎
·
I love me some pumpkin, but apples are another great fall staple. And there's something about going apple picking with a basket and plaid scarf that feels like I'm fresh out of a New England town.

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to Thanksgiving and the day that is set aside to feel thankful for what we have.
·
But how can we turn gratitude into a daily habit instead of a once-a-year holiday obligation?
·
By recognizing the abundance we already have…our family, our relationships, our material things that bring us comfort and our memories, dreams, and hopes.
·
Our lives can be enriched so much if we take the time to be thankful and see the good in all that we have.
