25 Things to Cross Off Your Winter Bucket List

I don’t know about you, but there’s something about winter that makes me want to get out there and make the most of the season.

The first snowfall? Magical. Christmas lights? Always a yes. Cozy nights in with a blanket, a good movie, and something warm to drink? Don’t even get me started.

Sure, the temperatures might be less than inviting, and there are only so many layers a person can wear before feeling like a walking marshmallow. But winter has its own kind of magic, and there’s plenty of fun to be had—even on the coldest days.

So why not make the most of it?

Whether you’re all about festive outings, snowy adventures, cozy nights at home, or finding little ways to give back, a winter bucket list is a fun way to make the season feel a little more special.

Here are 25 things to add to your winter bucket list. See how many you can check off!

1. Visit a Christmas tree farm. Take in all those fresh evergreen aromas and maybe bring home a wreath or a tree. Psst… I’ve never had a real Christmas tree. Maybe this is my year?

2. Try a new seasonal drink. Visit a local coffee shop or make something festive at home. I’m always open to recommendations!

3. Learn to ice skate, snowboard, or ski. Bonus points if you manage to stay upright the entire time.

4. Go see Christmas lights and decorations. Find a neighborhood known for its displays, visit a light show, or simply take a festive evening stroll.

5. Go on a sleigh ride. Where I’ll find one, I have absolutely no idea. But gosh dang it, I’m doing it someday.

6. Make a gingerbread house. Whether you follow the instructions or create an architectural disaster, the important thing is having fun.

7. Send a care package to someone serving in the military. A thoughtful package or letter can be a lovely way to show someone they’re appreciated. Check current mailing guidelines before sending anything.

8. Decorate your home for winter. Think cozy blankets, twinkling lights, seasonal greenery, and anything that makes you want to curl up and stay awhile.

9. Have a Christmas movie marathon. The classics, the cheesy romantic comedies, the movies you’ve watched a hundred times—there’s room for all of them.

10. Send holiday cards. Get those cards in the mail early, before the holiday rush turns your to-do list into a competitive sport.

11. Attend a holiday party or seasonal gathering. Dress up, catch up with friends, and enjoy a little festive fun.

12. Blast your favorite holiday music. In the car, while cleaning, while decorating… basically anywhere. And if you’ve already started listening in October, I support your commitment.

13. Build a snowman. Traditional carrot nose optional. Creative accessories encouraged.

14. Have a snowball fight. Just remember that not everyone appreciates being ambushed with a snowball when they’re minding their own business.

15. Watch the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square. In person if you’re feeling adventurous—or from your couch, where it’s warm and there are snacks. Personally, I’m not ruling out the couch.

16. Take pictures in the snow. Capture the fresh snowfall, the frosty trees, or a few fun photos with friends. Winter doesn’t last forever, after all.

17. Build a blanket fort. Add fairy lights, pillows, snacks, and a movie for the ultimate cozy night in.

18. Visit a Christmas market or winter market. Browse handmade gifts, seasonal treats, local vendors, and festive decorations.

19. Wear matching family pajamas or cozy socks. It’s cheesy, it’s cute, and sometimes that’s exactly the point.

20. Donate clothes, toys, books, or other essentials. Take a little time to pass along things in good condition or support a local organization serving your community.

21. Go to a hockey game. There’s nothing quite like the energy of a live game. And if you’re cheering for the Rangers, let’s go!

22. Try to catch a snowflake on your tongue. A classic winter activity that deserves a place on the list, even if you end up catching more snow on your nose.

23. Thank someone who serves your community. Write a note of appreciation or thank a firefighter, service member, or other community worker for what they do.

24. Host a board game night with a DIY pizza bar. Set out everyone’s favorite toppings and let each person make their own pizza. Add snacks and a little friendly competition for good measure.

25. Learn about another culture’s winter holiday traditions. Read about a celebration you don’t know much about, try a traditional recipe, or attend a local cultural event when appropriate.

Make This Winter Your Own

The best part about a winter bucket list is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

You don’t have to complete all 25 activities, spend a fortune on outings, or turn every weekend into an elaborate adventure. Some of the best winter memories come from the simplest things: a walk through the snow, a movie night with friends, or a cup of hot chocolate after a long day.

Pick a few activities that sound fun, add your own ideas, and make the season your own.

And remember, winter isn’t just about the holidays. There’s plenty of magic to be found throughout the season, long after the decorations come down.
