The Roommate Series

August 18, 2021 2 min read 28 Comments

When I say I’ve been planning this post ever since I started blogging, I’ve been planning this post ever since I started!

Now you might be thinking…not another blog post about college and roommates, but I promise you this one is gonna be, how should I say it without giving away too much… a tad different. Wanna know why? For starters, I collectively had a total of 27 suitemates. 2 colleges, and 5 rooms later…TWENTY-SEVEN!  I kid you not.

I mean I knew it was up there but when I didn’t have any more fingers and toes to count, I knew the number was legit high.

And with 27 suitemates/roommates, that means a ton of stories that have just got to be shared; not just for remembrance later down the line when I miss my good ol’ college days, but because these stories are entertaining AF (as I’ve been told by my friends ?)

So without further ado, sit back, relax, grab some popcorn (or, don’t…you’ll find out about that soon enough), and enjoy the stroll down memory lane.

SNEAK PREVIEW

The Roommates Series, Part 1. Fall Semester: You Mean I Have to Sleep There?!

I’m 18 and it’s 2 years post-high school since I took a gap year before embarking on my college journey.

I’m doe-eyed, excited, but super nervous as the longest time I spent away from home was a school day. Nonetheless, I was packed up and ready for my first collegiate year.

I chose a small school in upstate New York nestled in the mountains—quite literally—it was actually a couple of minutes away from the infamous town of Sleepy Hollow. And yes, boys and girls, the drive up was just as spooky as the stories neatly nestled within town. I’m talking, disappearing cars, ominous state troopers, and of course, pure bone-chilling fear…

Now I might have conveniently forgotten what the heck happened between that moment and actually arriving at school but the point is we side-roaded it—fog and all-cause I wasn’t missing move-in day!

Getting my room assignment, I’m met with the 6 girls who, unbeknownst to them, would be the start of the roommate brigade.

So here we have it! The start of The Roommate Series, I hope y’all stick along as we relive a big part of my college journey.

What were some of your favorite college or school memories?

I feel like a dinosaur, It’s been centuries since I finished college lol But this brings back so many sweet memories! It’s such a great time and you’ll be making tons of friends! I’m excited to read your journey, keep us updated 🙂

HAHA, it’s only been 2 years since I graduated and it feels like forever ago! You gotta love the sweet back-to-school nostalgia though. This is definitely going to be an ongoing series so more adventures to come.

  • A Nation of Moms August 27, 2021 at 7:11 pm

That is a lot of roomates! I was definitely over roomates by the time I moved in with my fiance. It’s usually a lot of craziness. Made some great friends, but I also like my own space 🙂

    • annaelleliz August 31, 2021 at 1:40 am

Best way to describe it! I loved having my roommates and all the cool adventures we had together (you’ll find out more about them soon) but I like my quiet time and space!

  • Catalina August 27, 2021 at 2:24 pm

I remember my roommates too. And those times are literally unique!

    • annaelleliz August 31, 2021 at 1:36 am

Unique is the best way to put it. It’s such an odd experience when you think about it; just getting put in a room with strangers for a year!

  • Tammy A August 27, 2021 at 9:32 am

I commuted to college since I lived so close, so I never experienced this either. But, I can’t wait to read more.

    • annaelleliz August 27, 2021 at 9:37 am

Aww thank you! I’ll let you experience it vicariously through me all the roommates I’ve had ?! Did you ever want to dorm or did you prefer commuting after a while?

  • Richelle Escat August 26, 2021 at 11:53 pm

I didn’t get to experience a roommate since my school is just two streets away. But that’s a great experience though.

    • annaelleliz August 27, 2021 at 9:35 am

Definitely have some memories and stories to share ?! Two streets aways seems like the best way to ensure you’re never late to class ?!

  • Ivan Jose August 26, 2021 at 11:27 pm

I didn’t have roommates in college because I preferred not to have them. So, I rented a room on my own.

    • annaelleliz August 27, 2021 at 9:29 am

Oh wow! Were you able to do it for the full 4 years? I know some colleges won’t let freshmen not be on campus, so kind of cool if you got that setup!

  • Tara Pittman August 26, 2021 at 6:34 pm

That is a lot of roommates. I did not have a roommate in college as mine moved in with her friend.

    • annaelleliz August 26, 2021 at 7:14 pm

I had lost count for a bit becasue I was like “no way”! Did you ever want a roommate or were you fine not having one?

  • Amber August 26, 2021 at 4:56 pm

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t keen on a roommate in college. I preferred to be alone but couldn’t afford a single dorm so I had to deal with the noisiness.

    • annaelleliz August 26, 2021 at 7:10 pm

LOLing at the noisiness! Personal space is kind of void with a roomate. I did evetually get a single dorm but still had a rotating number of suitemates.

  • Melissa Chapman of The Staten Island Family August 26, 2021 at 4:24 pm

My daughter is away at school and finding the right roomate is so important. It seems like this girl has a good idea and is having a lot of fun.

    • annaelleliz August 26, 2021 at 7:08 pm

It’s probably a little different with the pandemic now but wishing your daughter a safe and fun school year!

Things did get interesting the more roommates switched out and new ones came in…

  • Jasmine Martin August 20, 2021 at 11:48 am

I’m not a fan of creepy roads either. Roommates definitely can be a hit or a miss. Being able to pick your roommates or just having cool roommates in general definitely helps the college experience.

    • annaelleliz August 20, 2021 at 3:39 pm

Those roads still haunt me ?. I mean that fog was movie set real! For sure with the hit or miss too! I definitely think picking your roommates eliminates some of those hits!

  • Tisha August 19, 2021 at 7:50 pm

I have roommates from college that I am still very close to! Love the friendships it built

    • annaelleliz August 20, 2021 at 3:33 pm

The built in friendships are the best part ?

  • nadaliebardo August 19, 2021 at 11:17 am

Oh room mates, brings back memories. There are ups and downs, but it’s a bond that will last forever.

    • annaelleliz August 20, 2021 at 3:28 pm

So true! Still friends with my roomates to this day; 5 years and couting ???

  • Heather Tomoyasu (@USJapanFam) August 19, 2021 at 8:55 am

What a great series idea, I am HERE FOR IT!! And also, 27 suite mates!? that’s insane!! I was in a suite situation my sophomore year (in Germany) and senior year (I was the RA) and I much preferred it to the regular dorm situation. Quick way to make new friends!

    • annaelleliz August 20, 2021 at 3:19 pm

I loved having suitemates too! I was able to make so many memories, and of course, have a bunch of stories ?

Oh RA life always seemed interesting but being in charge or the go-to for whole hall would be too much pressure for me!

  • monicasimpson28 August 18, 2021 at 9:47 pm

My roomates were definitely the best part of my college experience. Those friendships helped me survive some tough moments!

    • annaelleliz August 20, 2021 at 3:16 pm

Same for me! It’s so amazing how fast and strong some of those friendships can form!
